I love that he called them "clowns" - such a nuanced slang depicting the times. My mom used to favor that one, too, and had no problem insisting on the "Can Do" attitude, when needed. I both admired that and feared it, because even in 'Merica it's not always celebrated when customers act that way (depending on where you live in the states!) I could feel every aspect of this chapter and loved to see the picture as well of young Wes and this "brute" Americanized Kiwi. Thanks for remaining a championing voice in the realm I allow myself to 'consume'.

Whats amazing to me as growing up in rural NZ is that there were certain american movies that influenced me.. and then this guy … and a characteristic
of what I saw in those american movies hammered it home.
Of course when I got the the USA in 2003 things were a bit different… but still so much better than NZ !
